Standard 2:    Establishes a safe, inclusive and respectful learning environment for a diverse population of students.

The group of students I had the pleasure of working with at Fossil Ridge were mostly all gifted and talented.

Attached also is a Contexts and Settings documentation of the demographics of the school and the classroom I worked in.

For my first artifact I have attached images above that show the exaggerated figure. It started with students having to try and draw the figure in all different gestures (these were just sketches so they werent suppose to be perfect, just to show the figure). After drawing all different gestures they had two different boxes to draw in before working in sculpture exaggerated, and abstracted. The boxes were separated with the definitions so students could explore ideas and work mostly on their own. For the gifted and talented in the class this is where they could really abstract the figure as far as they want to.

My second artifact was working with the 'troubling' students. There were a couple students in class that didn't always like the idea of working on art projects and had more attitude than others. My mentor teacher had many talks with me about how if they didn't like us they'd just leave, but they feel safe in art. One thing I learned is that sometimes we talk to students differently. For example one student was using scissors instead of a saw to cut the metal and I told her " today is the day you break a pair of scissors" and she snapped back with some really colorful language. When I told my mentor teacher she explained to me that if she would have been in that situation  she would have already told the student that she was being charged on her student account for the scissors, my mentor teacher also reassured me that despite her colorful language she still feels safe with me and that is why she didn't leave.

My third artifact was also another interaction with a student. Everyday I would walk around and see what everyone was creating and ask them how things were going. One of my students openly admitted to being transgender and being bullied in the hall. We got to talk about what it means to be a bully and get bullies. This for me was a pivotal moment for me because I got to connect with a student that will be one of many in my class wither that is a trans student or someone who is being bullied.

As for my level with this standard I think I am Developing and almost reaching proficient. I had a lot of opportunities to work with all different students this semester and that was really awesome. I would like to work with more ethnically diverse students and financially diverse as well though.
