CREATIVE MASKS
ART EXPERIENCE
Project Description:
We will be teaching students how to create a mask. We will show a slideshow of different masks (some historical, some cultural, and some aesthetics). This lesson is based on the museum visit for our fourth class. This exhibit is on masks created by different artists. These masks will eventually get auctioned off but are on display for the public prior to the auction. It is important to have the students gain prior knowledge about masks in general, before our museum visit. The students will gain a greater appreciation and more respect for the masks in the exhibit because of this lesson.

Essential Understanding:
I understand the different ways to design and create a mask. I will gain a better understanding on how 3-D art can be functional and how creativity can inhabit different ways of making.

Objectives:
I can use historical, cultural, and aesthetics masks as references to create my own mask. I will gain knowledge and respect towards the mask making process. I will be able to use my prior knowledge from this lesson when viewing the mask exhibit for our next class. I can use my ideas and sketches as a starting point in the creative process of mask making.

Skills:
1. Gain some historical background about masks
2. Refine fine motor skills
INSTRUCTION
During this class students will explore the functionality of masks as well as the design aspect. Students will work with plaster to make a mask and then be able to create based upon their new understanding of masks.aol

What worked well for this art experience? Why?
There were a few things I thought worked very well for this art experience, first I think the questions about what masks were and how they function was an interesting way to segment into the project. I also think having everyone gather at one table to watch how the masks were made was very successful because students were able to observe and ask questions as they watched the process. I also thought going back to the transportation of your dreams from class two after finishing the masks was a great idea, students were excited to see their vehicles and continue working on them.
What didn’t work well for this art experience? Why?
Somethings did not work well for this art experience however would have been easy to fix. The first I would say was probably the way we lectured in the front of class, I think students could have more fun and been more engaged if they had a creation sheet where they explain their own ideas on masks as well as function vs. non functional items. I feel like maybe we could have examples of functional things vs non functional also because students seemed to be confused on the differences between the two. Also students did finish masks very early and did not seem to want to add larger noses, or ears, or eyebrows, or just extra add on's in general.
What would you do differently? Why?
I would probably do my demonstration differently and show students how they can add on to the mask to make lets say cat ears out of tape and plaster. I feel like because my demonstration was so flat students reflected theirs this way too. In our lecture we had students reflect on if they have ever used a mask before if so what was it and how did they use it, I might have students reflect on this a little more before they start to create so maybe they can use this memory of their mask they've worn before to create something alike. I feel like students will be more into the creation and addition to their masks after they see what is at the museum and this will really bring the whole lesson together.
