PINCH POT CREATIONS

First project.jpg

ART EXPERIENCE

Project description:
In this project we will work with clay to make a pinch pot using our imaginations! There are options to create pots that resemble animals, fruits, monsters and more. We will work with clay to create the basic element and when clay is close to dry we will move on to other stations to create/add texture as well as possibly paint our pinch pots.

Essential Understanding:

Students will learn how to shape clay and other materials into cute, fun, functional pinch pots.

Objectives:

-Students will develop and understanding of 3D art

-Students will be able to differentiate 2D art and 3D art

-Students will be able to express themselves using clay, by making a imaginative pinch pot

-Students will develop a better understanding of clay and the function of clay

Skills:

1. Exploring clay as a medium

2. Refining fine motor skills

3. Expressing artistic ideas

4. Developing problem solving skills

RELECTION

Journey Entry

What worked well for this art experience? Why?

Our first class was a lot of fun, we had the students work with clay to make a pinch pot of some sort. The idea of making a pinch pot was so the students would get a basic to making clay down. In class discussions lately we have been talking about how the teacher should not giving the student what to do and should make it more so the student has their own choice to do what they want to do but with some structure. So in order to achieve a structured lesson with student freedom we did an ice breaker in the beginning of class to get students talking about what they enjoy (favorite food, favorite animal, and favorite color); with what they enjoyed in mind we were hoping it would help shape the pinch pots that we were about to tell them about (we demonstrated how a pinch pot was made but not what they should do or add to it because we wanted that creation part to be left up to them). I think that was something we really did well on, the students really enjoyed making pinch pots and they did not hold back on what they imagined, one student made a mask and even was talking to us about how she was using the pinching method that we taught her.

What didn’t work well for this art experience? Why?

If there is one thing I wish we could had done differently would have been to be prepared if someone wasn't interested in using clay. In class we had one student who was less interested in using clay and more interested in the things they knew how to use. I had talked to Alison and asked if maybe their was something we could do to make this student to feel more involved and she told me it was okay and that they are use to working with magazines and glue so when we supplied them with those items they started using them and was much more excited to be working with something they were comfortable with. Also students enjoyed making things, however they did end up finishing everything about half an hour early.

What would you do differently?  Why?

Next time we plan on making a story out of the lesson. After observing the students we realized that they all love talking about adventures, animals, and travel. We have a plan to shape our lesson in a way that everyone will be able to get involved. We thought maybe if we gave the prompt what would be your dream way of transportation, students will have more opportunity to make something they would love to travel in. With this lesson plan I believe we can get all students involved in creating their way to travel. Also next class we will have students start out by finishing their pinch pots by painting or glazing them, then students will work on their dream transportation. With students finishing painting and making their dream transportation this will hopefully solve the problem about students finishing early.
