Key Concepts:
-
Planning, communication, influence, experimentation, language of art

Essential Understandings:

-
Artists and designers use what they have observed as inspiration for their artwork.
-
Artists and designers can utilize multiple mediums to create an artwork.

Objectives/Learning:
-
After demonstration of the monoprinting process, students will be able to create at least two monoprints using line, shape, and color to form a thoughtful and effective design. (Bloom’s: Apply/Standard: Create/GLE: 2/Art Learning: Materials and techniques/Numeracy [steps to a procedure])
-
Utilizing preliminary sketches and in-progress artwork, students will be able to create a mixed media Supernova using both techniques to express their ideas. (Bloom’s: Create/Standard: Create/GLE: 1/Art Learning: Expressive features and characteristics of art/Literacy & Numeracy)
-
Using acrylic paint, students will be able to utilize the appropriate use of dry wash, graded wash, and flat wash techniques in their artwork. (Bloom’s: Apply/Standard: Create/GLE: 2/Art Learning: Materials and techniques)

Skills:
-
Planning, creative problem solving, analyzing

Art Focus:
-
In today's class period, there will be a couple of different things students will be doing. There will be one station set up for students to finish up or experiment more with monoprinting. Students will also begin adding painting elements to their artwork from the previous week. Teachers will be demonstrating to students dry brush, flat wash, and graded wash techniques for students to utilize in their artwork.
Literacy Focus:
-
Supernova, monoprint, reversal, dry brush, flat wash, graded wash (vocabulary terms)
-
Mixed media
-
Art language and vocabulary will be encouraged when appropriate

Daniel started out the class, by getting a recap of what happened last week, when asking the students to share what we did one student said "we drew on plastic with marker, dipped our paper in water, dried it off then put the paper on the plastic and the image moved to the paper from the plastic!" After that Daniel asked what students thought of the processes and we got a lot of responses of "can we do it again!" That is why even though we were going to be explorign acrylics there was a station set up for the monoprinting.

After Daniel welcomed the class Melissa taught the students some brush techniques and even a little bit about the palette knife. Students were very focused during the presentation on tools and techniques that when Melissa asked "what happens when we mix red and blue?" The students all shouted, "purple!" It was important the students listen to the techniques because we didn't want a classroom and students to end up covered in acrylic paint.

Some students wanted to explore line and shape while others just wanted to explore texture. On the left, this student was exploring texture when asked what he was up to he said "Im making abstract art, because when supernovas explode is abstract and not predictable". On the right we have students either painting right on top of their supernovas or keeping their supernovas in mind when exploring the use of shape and line.

Here we have a student exploring color and learning about stippling the student had said "look if I press the brush like this it leaves a really cool texture", so that is when we introduced a new vocabulary word to her about the process of stippling.

Some students wanted to explore the monoprinting a little more, the video on the left is a student who was really interested in creating and exploring more ideas. On the right a student wanted to explore finger painting because of the texture it would make. Students were encouraged to utilize other painting materials besides paint brushes.

In this final video this student utilized the palette knife. She had never used one before and she wanted to explore the tool, she ended up using it the whole class, she started small then moved on to paint this rainbow. She said "I enjoy the palette knife because of all the texture and the way it mixes the paint" shortly after she made this crisp rainbow she utilized the palette knife to paint black around the rainbow and drag some black through it.
After class we did a mini critique where we talked about some of the artwork the students saw. Students were very interested in the way other students created their work and students were interested in sharing how they created their work and what materials they explored. We are excited to see what our students will utilize next class!
