Supernova Projects Day 2

Class #8

11-09-18

Project:

Supernova monoprinting and painting exploration - In today's class period, students will be experimenting with the monoprinting process and developing their thoughts into an artwork. Students will be drawing with marker onto plexi-glass and transferring these images onto a damp piece of paper. Students will also be encouraged to experiment with adding other materials, such as pastel, pencil, and/or watercolor pencil. It is important to note that in the previous class period, a significant number of students were absent so there will be some students beginning the planning process.

Key Concepts:

  • Planning, communication, influence, experimentation, language of art

Essential Understandings:

  • Art and design can be used to communicate ideas and findings to others.

  • Artists and designers use what they have observed as inspiration for their artwork.

Objectives/Learning:

  • Upon being shown a variety of Supernova images and completing Supernova Discovery Menu, students will be able to generate a “discovered” Supernova in their sketchbook referencing specific elements from the worksheet in their drawing. (Bloom’s: Understand/Standard: Comprehend/GLE: 1/Art Learning: Ideation & multicultural content/Literacy & Technology)

  • After demonstration of the monoprinting process, students will be able to create at least two monoprints using line, shape, and color to form a thoughtful and effective design. (Bloom’s: Apply/Standard: Create/GLE: 2/Art Learning: Materials and techniques/Numeracy [steps to a procedure])

  • Utilizing preliminary sketches and in-progress artwork, students will be able to create a mixed media Supernova using both techniques to express their ideas. (Bloom’s: Create/Standard: Create/GLE: 1/Art Learning: Expressive features and characteristics of art/Literacy & Numeracy)

Skills:

  • Observation, planning, creative problem solving

Art Focus:

  • In today's class period, students will be experimenting with monoprinting with marker on plexi-glass onto paper. Students will have the opportunity to create multiple prints and try a few different ideas. Many students were absent last week, so teachers will re-teach the printing demo to students. Some students will be in the planning process, and some students will be experimenting with mixed media techniques.

Literacy Focus:

  • Supernova, monoprint, reversal (vocabulary terms)

  • Supernova playsheet

  • Art language and vocabulary will be encouraged when appropriate

Daniel started out the class by asking the students about what we did last week and because we had so many sick students Daniel opened the floor to the students to teach their peers what they missed from the week before.

Students who were out last week joined Daniel for another demonstration of the monoprint process while other students jumped back into the creation process. Shown here is one student exploring the use of tracing her original sketch onto the plastic. She was worried because she wanted to make the same image but she was unsure how, that is why she started tracing it.

Shown in these two images are two students exploring the use of adding on to their monoprint the picture on the left the student is saying "I tried doing the monoprinting and all my yellow washed away." We explained to the student that he could explore with the markers or the colored pencils so shown here is the student coloring with the water colored pencils. The image on the right is a student exploring monoprinting over a previous drawing.

In this video a student shows their first monoprint! They were excited because "the colors blended a lot more than I thought they would!"

In this video we hear students excited to keep experimenting with the monoprints "Where can I get more paper?" This student made and explored at least 5 different monoprints.

In the photo on the right a student said "I dont want to copy my plan I kind of just want to draw randomly." The student stuck with the colors from his plan but wanted to explore different lines and shapes.

In the video on the left the student wanted to watch the colors mix and all the air to go away on the plate, this was an interesting processes because all of the other students were doing it the way they were taught with the paper on top of the plate such as the one on the right. The student on the right experimented with getting the plate wet and the paper stayed dry. This student was so excited about his discovery he asked if he could show his experiment â€‹with the class, when he did show the class a lot of students wanted to try this way of printing.
