Paper Marbling - Day Three & Revisiting Cyanotypes

Class #6

10-28-18

Project:

Paper Marbling - Students will be finishing up their paper marbling Nebula projects from the class period before. Once the students finish, the class will break into groups and reflect on the creations they just made.

Cyanotypes - Students will be revisiting the project from earlier in the class. Since the weather conditions were not the most ideal, the Cyanotypes did not work as intended.  Students will use found objects from the teachers' collection to create a composition for their prints.  This will give students the opportunity to see what a successful Cyanotype print looks like.

Key Concepts:

  • Reflection, exploration, revisiting, language of art

Essential Understandings:

  • Artists and designers use artwork to communicate what they have seen.

  • Artists and designers create pleasing compositions by planning/experimenting with line, shape, and value to make patterns and rhythm.

  • Artists and designers reflect on their work once it is completed.

Objectives/Learning:

  • Using completed artwork, students will be able to identify and share specific elements of their peers’ artwork that interest/excite them using art vocabulary. (Bloom’s: Evaluate and apply/Standard: Transfer/GLE: Using interdisciplinary knowledge, investigate and discuss how diverse communities address issues relevant to their culture, place, and times/Art Learning: Assessment-evaluation/Literacy: discussion, art language)

  • Using completed artwork, students will be doing a gallery walk and will be using tokens to describe what they think of the work.

  • (Bloom’s: Create/Standard: Reflect/GLE: Evaluate personal and peer work using the language of visual art and design/Art Learning: Critical reflection-transfer/Literacy)

  • After demonstration of the cyanotype process, students will be able to create a cyanotype print using line, shape, form, and pattern to form a purposeful composition. (Bloom’s: Create/Standard: Create/GLE: Utilize different media, processes, and studio skills to create works of art and design/Art Learning: Materials and techniques/Literacy & Numeracy: negative, exposure time)

Skills:

  • Interpretation, planning, following a procedure, creative problem solving

Art Focus:

  • In today's class period, students will be finishing up their artwork for the first few minutes of the class, and then students will participate in a reflective activity on the artwork they just created.  In the second half of the class period, students will be once again creating Cyanotype prints.  This will allow students to observe how different conditions can influence this process.

Literary Focus:

  • Listed procedure for students to follow

  • Use to art language will be encouraged when appropriate (critique)

  • Cyanotype, exposure, agitation

First Daniel welcomed the class by going over what we did a couple weeks ago. He asked the students how much time they think they would need to finish their Nebulas from a couple weeks ago and they decided about 15 minutes. Attached bellow is students finishing up their ideas.

Then we separated students into 4 groups to do a token critique. Students had 4 cards to choose from and as a group they had to decide what they loved, what was a good idea, what took a lot of time to make, and what could they have a personal connection with. Attache here is students deciding as a group where to place the cards. Students were given about 5 minutes to do this activity.

In the picture above we had all students sit back down and as a group we reflected what they decided to put their token on. In this particular photo a student had put a personal connection token on the picture when asked why he explains "I am exited for this piece of art because me and the student who made it have plans of combining our work to make none big piece." this token reflection was a interesting one in particular because students weren't asked to combine work but one student had missed the original lesson and another student asked if maybe they would want to combine their nebulas. That is why the one Melissa is holding is a pastel and the other pieces of art are the paper marbling technique that was learned.

One of the tokens that was laid for another artwork that was covered in the paper marbling technique was the clock and a student reflected "I put the clock because I didn't even cover my whole page and that took a long time, I cant even imagine how long it took to cover the whole thing", this made the artist very excited and he did say that it took a long time but hes happy with the way it looked.

After the token reflective activity we introduced cyanotypes because we finally had a sunny day to try them again. We brought in a bin of found objects for them to choose from and we had a student explain to the class again the process of making a cyanotype. Attached here are the video of painting the chemical on and laying the objects on.

When we went outside to watch our cyanotypes change we had the students sit down with their work and watch them change there was a lot of excitement and a lot of comments of "whoa its such dark blue!" We were also presented with a really unique opportunity because as soon as we went outside the little kids started recces so our 4th and 5th graders got to explain the process of cyanotypes and what they made.

Attached bellow is the videos of us washing off the cyanotype chemicals the students were much more excited because it didn't all wash off this time but there were some comments  of "mine doesn't look like how I thought it would, it didnt really make the shape I put on the paper." Even though the artwork didn't go fully as planned this is an important learning lesson for the students to take, your first draft isn't your final product.
